How do I get flawless skin texture using frequency separation?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Fake it until you make it, that’s the way of Photoshop. Watch this photoshop tutorial on my secret to flawless skin texture using frequency separation . This technique comes in handy for situations when you may not have the time to retouch in detail or if the texture is just too difficult to handle.

THE SECRET TO PERFECT SKIN TEXTURE

  1. Set up Frequency Separation in Adobe Photoshop. See my previous posts on how to do so.

  2. Turn off the TEXTURE LAYER Visibility (the eye icon next to the layer’s name)

  3. Select the MIXER BRUSH TOOL and adjust all settings to 26%. Use the brush to paint over the uneven skin tone areas using the OPTION button to select a sample to cover it. Paint on a new blank layer only that’s placed beneath the TEXTURE LAYER.

  4. Then turn on the TEXTURE LAYER Visibility by clicking in the place of where the eye icon was.

  5. With the TEXTURE LAYER selected, take the ERASER TOOL on a low opacity/flow and lightly erase the existing skin texture.

  6. Once you’re done, select the the DIGITAL SKIN TEXTURE adjustment that’s located under the Frequency Separation tab in the RETOUCH ACADEMY BEAUTY PANEL.

  7. Paint over the entire exposed skin areas with the BRUSH TOOL on a medium low opacity/fill on the layer’s mask. Build up the effect by painting with WHITE and erase by painting with BLACK.

This trick can be used for specialized areas or large areas like I demonstrated. You can also the Digital Skin Texture adjustment to brush on texture to areas that lacked skin texture in the first place due to shooting soft or a slight missed focus.

How do I use dodge and burn in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Here is a quick fix to adding contrast to your subject using dodge and burn. I especially love dodging and burning clothes when editing to emphasize the shapes the fabric makes such as ruffles. Watch the clip and read below to find out how you can do the same.

HOW TO USE DODGE AND BURN

  1. Create two curves adjustment layers

  2. Label them separately, DODGE and the other BURN

  3. Dodge is the layer of the highlights we are adding to the photo so change the layer blend mode to SCREEN then invert the layer mask with keyboard shortcut COMMAND I.

  4. Burn is the layer of the shadows  we are adding to the photo so change the layer blend mode to MULTIPLY then invert it with keyboard shortcut COMMAND I

  5. Paint on the highest points of the face/areas you want to pop out with white on the BRUSH TOOL on the DODGE LAYER.

  6. Paint on the highest points of the face/areas you want to pop out with white on the BRUSH TOOL on the DODGE LAYER.

  7. Paint with black on the layer masks to take away the effect if you go too far

My tip is to be mindful of your shadows when dodging and burning. The best advice I’ve ever received when it came to retouching is that shadows/light controls the shape of someone’s face, if you alter that you’re changing the way they look. Since hearing that, I’m always respectful of a person’s natural shadows so at the end of the retouch, they still look like themselves.

How do I retouch makeup in Photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

After watching this video, go ahead and put Makeup Artist in your Instagram Bio. I promise you’ll feel like an artist on another level once you learn how to fix any makeup mishap. Tune in to find out how I fix makeup in photoshop.

HOW TO EDIT MAKEUP

  1. Create a layer copy with the keyboard shortcut COMMAND J

  2. Press COMMAND + to zoom in on the photo (COMMAND - to zoom out)

  3. Lash Gap Fix:  Use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select the whole eye, copy and paste it (COMMAND C followed  by COMMAND V), click on it to activate the MOVE TOOL and drag the border down to cover the gap, erase the excess eye with the ERASE TOOL, and then use the BURN TOOL with 10% on the SHADOWS settings on the lash line to darken it.

  4. Patchy Brow Fix: Use the BRUSH TOOL on a semi-hardness and 15% opacity and tiny size, sample the brow hairs color with OPTION and paint in the eyebrow hairs that are missing

  5. Under Eye fix: Select the under eye area, copy and paste it (COMMAND C and COMMAND V), click and drag it into place to cover the creases, click the LAYER MASK BUTTON to create a layer mask, invert the mask with COMMAND I shortcut, and use BRUSH TOOL to paint with WHITE to cover the crease.

  6. Dodge and burn the eyeshadow to intense the look (tutorial linked below)

My advice to retouching makeup is to pay attention to detail. It’s better to make many ittle tweaks that add up to make a difference, than to make huge changes that look unnatural.

How to change the color of anything in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Sometimes we want to change or color match things in Photoshop but don’t know how? That ends right here and now with this quick fix tutorial. Watch me change colors in my photo with a click of a button.

HOW TO CHANGE THE  COLOR ANYTHING

  1. Select HUE/SATURATION from the ADJUSTMENTS window tab

  2. Click on the COLOR PICKER icon (looks like a pointing finger) to select the color you wish to change

  3. When you select the color, your color dropbox with automatically change to the color category that shade falls under

  4. Move the HUE slider to the color you want. Use the lightness/saturation to adjust the shade of the color

  5. To just alter one selected element, use your QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select it

  6. Repeat steps #1-4 to change the color

My advice here is that if your item you want to change is the same color as other objects in the photo, you can erase the effect from them by painting with BLACK on the layer mask. I also recommend painting on your layer mask with WHITE to clean up the selection from the QUICK SELECTION TOOL. You can also use the SELECTIVE COLOR ADJUSTMENT to change the color instead of HUE/SATURATION.

How do I use Frequency Separation as a beginner?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Want to use frequency separation to retouch but too intimidated to try it? This post is for you! Frequency Separation is just a tool that retouchers use to target skin tone and skin texture layers separately. In this post I will break down how to set up frequency separation and the easiest way to use it to retouch!

HOW TO SET UP FREQUENCY SEPARATION TO RETOUCH

  1. Create two background layers by hitting the keyboard shortcut COMMAND J twice

  2. Label your layers by double clicking them. Label the bottom one “TONE” and the top layer “TEXTURE”

  3. Turn off the top “TEXTURE” visibility by clicking the EYE ICON next to the layer name

  4. Select the TONE layer then go to FILTER tab and select BLUR, and then click GUSSIAN BLUR from the drop down menu

  5. Set your radius between 5-9.0 and hit OK

  6. Turn back on the TEXTURE layer visibility by hitting the space where the EYE ICON was

  7. Select that layer then go to IMAGE TAB and click APPLY IMAGE

  8. Fill this information into the respected slots in the dialogue box- Layer: tone , Blending: Subtract , Scale: 2 , Offset: 128

  9. Then hit ok to accept these changes. Your layer should turn gray but you should still see a faint outline of your photo.

  10. Change the blend mode of the TEXTURE LAYER to LINEAR LIGHT

I also have tutorial on how to record an action for frequency separation so you don’t have to repeat this long process every single time you edit photos. Link:

HOW TO SMOOTH SKIN WITH FREQUENCY SEPARATION

  1. For skin smoothing: circle an uneven skin area with the LASSO TOOL with the TONE layer selected

  2. Go to the FILTER TAB then select BLUR and click on GUSSIAN BLUR

  3. Use the same radius you used to set up FS and hit ok

  4. Repeat steps 1-3 on various problem areas until it’s even. You can repeatedly go over the same areas

My advice is to clean your photo of texture blemishes before doing frequency separation such as using the HEALING BRUSH TOOL on pimples. To make this skin smoothing effect natural, I sugguest making a copy of the TONE LAYER to do the blurring and then turn down the layer FILL to blend it with the original.

How can I make hair longer in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

A part of photo magic is creating the fantasy. We can do anything we imagine in the world of Photoshop. Sometimes I like to add extra glamour to my beauty shots by making the hair bigger and longer. Keep reading to find out how!

HOW TO LENGTHEN HAIR IN PHOTOSHOP

  1. Create a new background layer copy with keyboard shortcut COMMAND J

  2. Clean up the flyaways with the CLONE STAMP TOOL on DARK blend mode. Paint over them on 80% opacity  and a soft brush setting

  3. Use the SPOT HEALING TOOL to remove the out of place hairs on the curls by clicking over the stray hairs

  4. Use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select the area of your choice to replicate

  5. Copy and the paste the selection with keyboard shortcuts COMMAND C then COMMAND V

  6. Click and drag the selection into place and with the ERASE tool remove the excess to blend into the existing hair

  7. Dodge and burn the hair to add dimension (link below on how I use dodge and burn)

My advice is to use your eraser wisely to blend the extension with the existing hair. You can make a layer mask (the button is next to the new layer button) and use your brush tool to erase and replace the hair. If you just want to give the hair more volume, you can do so with the LIQUIFY filter (Filter tab > Liquify)  and HAND TOOL.

How can I edit makeup in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

This is an all inclusive guide to fixing some of the most common issues I run across when retouching makeup. In this overview, get a glimpse of how I fix the most complicated problems simply and efficiently.

HOW TO EDIT MAKEUP IN PHOTOSHOP?

  4. Thick Brows Fix: Go to the FILTER TAB at the top of the screen on Photoshop’s menu panel. Then use the HAND TOOL to push and pull the eyebrows into place.

  5. Blotchy Foundation Fix: Setup Frequency Separation and click lightly go over the face with the MIXER BRUSH (on all 26% settings) sampling everytime you move to a new area,

  6. Under Eye Crease Fix: While still on Frequency separation, choose the CLONE STAMP TOOL (on 100% all settings and a tiny size) and sample a clean area with OPTION, and click to cover the crease.

My advice as a photographer is to network with local talented  makeup artists and build a rapport with them. This way you can build a referral list to send to your clients to ensure you have makeup on set that doesn’t require so much time in post. It’s also a win win because those makeup artists will also recommend clients to you and help with portfolio shoots if the relationship beneficial for all.

How do I fixed a colored lace wig in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Some things are best left on instagram, and by some I mean colored lace wigs! We love to double tap them on our feed but there’s no mention of the work of the stylist and photographer who made it so likeable. So if you’re a photographer struggling to save a wig, or an outsider wanting to see how it all goes down behind the scenes, stayed tuned.

HOW TO FIX A LACE WIG IN PHOTOSHOP

  1. Create a layer copy with the keyboard shortcut COMMAND J

  2. Go to the FILTER TAB at the top of the screen on Photoshop’s menu panel

  3. Use the HAND TOOL to reshape the bulkiness at the top of the wig

  4. Use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select a nice sample of hair

  5. Press COMMAND C to copy the selection and COMMAND V to paste the selection

  6. Click and drag the sample over an area you want to replace it with

  7. Erase the edges of the selection to blend it into the original photo with the ERASE TOOL

  8. Repeat until you’re satisfied

My tip to further blend the hair is to use your HUE/SATURATION adjustments and dodge/burn to properly blend the samples into the originial. You can also blend by using the layer fill/opacity to fade the samples into the original.

HOW TO FIX A LACE WIG PART

  1. Go to the FILTER TAB at the top of Photoshop’s menu panel

  2. Select LIQUIFY from the drop down menu

  3. Use the PUCKER TOOL to narrow the part by lightly clicking the button slowly down the part

My tip is to go in with the HAND TOOL in LIQUIFY to manually push and pull the part after doing these steps to get the part exactly to your liking. Be careful to make sure it’s natural and your changes are undetectable.

How can I fix a lace wig in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Lace wigs are a photographer’s natural enemy. They have flyaways, screen door mesh in the part, and need constant attention combing between each frame. Even with the best preparation and application, they almost always require retouching. I’ve seen wigs that look like they’re coming from the scalp in real life not stand a chance under studio photography lights. But I care enough about my clients that I will not let them look anything other than on point when it’s said and done.

Here’s how to retouch a lace front wig in photoshop using only ONE TOOL. Yes, just one: the clone stamp tool. It’s many days I struggled at my computer to learn how to master this skill enough to be able to simplify it for you. It’s not easy but very tedious. You definitely have to be patient and have your fingers on COMMAND Z to undo at all times lol.

Steps to retouching a lace wig:

  1. Press play on your favorite album because you’re going to be here for a while.

  2. Make a new background copy dragging the layer to the page icon below it

  3. Use the clone stamp tool by sampling an area using OPTION and then paint it over the problem area by clicking and dragging. That’s the technique for this entire tutorial.

  4. Make sure your brush hardness and opacity is relatively low, like between 20-50%

  5. Erase with a hard brush and high opacity (like 70-80%) over any mistakes along the edges for a cleaner look.

  6. For the lace part: first sample from the forehead and paint a thin part over the lace. Decrease the brush size the further back you go. Use the brackets to change brush size

  7. Erase over that a little with a soft brush on like 10% opacity to soften it.  I forgot to do that in the video but it’s important.

  8. Sample the edges of the hair and bring them back closer together to form a neat looking part.

  9. Clone stamp over any stray hairs and fly aways. Working with the clone stamp remember to same everytime you release. Don’t try to drag to far but go in shorter strokes. And also don’t forget to change your brush size and opacity as needed.

  10.  Done. You made it. I knew you could.

How can I extend a background in Photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

It’s nothing worse than having on a fly outfit, the luck of a good baby hair day, sorting through 50,000 bad angles until you find the perfect moment, then you get ready to post it on the gram and what happens? It. just. doesn’t. Fit. You know what’s worse? Spending hours retouching you clients photos, sacrificing dates and family time, only for your client to send them back because the photos just aren’t easy to share. I avoid all of the above but trying to be mindful to give  my model some breathing room when composing and always cropping the photos into instagram ratios.

Here are the aspect ratios to be mindful for instagram:

1:1 is for a square photo

4:5 is a full sizes photo

9:16 is an instagram story photo

Now here’s how to resize a photo for instagram by extending the background:

  1. Import your photo into photoshop

  2. Press the crop tool

  3. Select one of the three instagram acceptable ratios by choosing from the menu options or typing it in. Personally, I keep my ratio on 4:5 because full size photos are harder to scroll past.

  4. Click and drag the photo into the position of your choice

  5. Begin dragging the ends of the crop tool square to get the right about of body into the frame.

  6. Press Enter to finalize the crop, an you’ll see your photo with colored bars where the empty space is.

  7. Press the square selection tool to create a selection of the left side of your photo and drag from top to bottom

  8. Press COMMAND C  to copy the selection

  9. Press COMMAND V to paste the selection into a blank layer

  10. Click on the selection to activate the MOVE TOOL

  11. Drag the transformation control squares that are outlining the selection, and drag one end over the empty space to extend the background.

  12. Hit the checkmark up top to finalize the selection. You will not be able to do anything in photoshop until you do.

  13. Repeat steps #7-12 on the other side

  14. Post on Instagram and tag me @symoneseven if you use this trick!
