How do I get flawless skin texture using frequency separation?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Fake it until you make it, that’s the way of Photoshop. Watch this photoshop tutorial on my secret to flawless skin texture using frequency separation . This technique comes in handy for situations when you may not have the time to retouch in detail or if the texture is just too difficult to handle.

THE SECRET TO PERFECT SKIN TEXTURE

  1. Set up Frequency Separation in Adobe Photoshop. See my previous posts on how to do so.

  2. Turn off the TEXTURE LAYER Visibility (the eye icon next to the layer’s name)

  3. Select the MIXER BRUSH TOOL and adjust all settings to 26%. Use the brush to paint over the uneven skin tone areas using the OPTION button to select a sample to cover it. Paint on a new blank layer only that’s placed beneath the TEXTURE LAYER.

  4. Then turn on the TEXTURE LAYER Visibility by clicking in the place of where the eye icon was.

  5. With the TEXTURE LAYER selected, take the ERASER TOOL on a low opacity/flow and lightly erase the existing skin texture.

  6. Once you’re done, select the the DIGITAL SKIN TEXTURE adjustment that’s located under the Frequency Separation tab in the RETOUCH ACADEMY BEAUTY PANEL.

  7. Paint over the entire exposed skin areas with the BRUSH TOOL on a medium low opacity/fill on the layer’s mask. Build up the effect by painting with WHITE and erase by painting with BLACK.

This trick can be used for specialized areas or large areas like I demonstrated. You can also the Digital Skin Texture adjustment to brush on texture to areas that lacked skin texture in the first place due to shooting soft or a slight missed focus.

HOW TO EDIT MAKEUP

  1. Create a layer copy with the keyboard shortcut COMMAND J

  2. Press COMMAND + to zoom in on the photo (COMMAND - to zoom out)

  3. Lash Gap Fix:  Use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select the whole eye, copy and paste it (COMMAND C followed  by COMMAND V), click on it to activate the MOVE TOOL and drag the border down to cover the gap, erase the excess eye with the ERASE TOOL, and then use the BURN TOOL with 10% on the SHADOWS settings on the lash line to darken it.

  4. Patchy Brow Fix: Use the BRUSH TOOL on a semi-hardness and 15% opacity and tiny size, sample the brow hairs color with OPTION and paint in the eyebrow hairs that are missing

  5. Under Eye fix: Select the under eye area, copy and paste it (COMMAND C and COMMAND V), click and drag it into place to cover the creases, click the LAYER MASK BUTTON to create a layer mask, invert the mask with COMMAND I shortcut, and use BRUSH TOOL to paint with WHITE to cover the crease.

How to change the color of anything in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Sometimes we want to change or color match things in Photoshop but don’t know how? That ends right here and now with this quick fix tutorial. Watch me change colors in my photo with a click of a button.

HOW TO CHANGE THE  COLOR ANYTHING

  1. Select HUE/SATURATION from the ADJUSTMENTS window tab

  2. Click on the COLOR PICKER icon (looks like a pointing finger) to select the color you wish to change

  3. When you select the color, your color dropbox with automatically change to the color category that shade falls under

  4. Move the HUE slider to the color you want. Use the lightness/saturation to adjust the shade of the color

  5. To just alter one selected element, use your QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select it

  6. Repeat steps #1-4 to change the color

My advice here is that if your item you want to change is the same color as other objects in the photo, you can erase the effect from them by painting with BLACK on the layer mask. I also recommend painting on your layer mask with WHITE to clean up the selection from the QUICK SELECTION TOOL. You can also use the SELECTIVE COLOR ADJUSTMENT to change the color instead of HUE/SATURATION.

How do I create a Photoshop Action for Frequency Separation?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Improve your workflow by using photoshop actions to glide through your editing process. A Photoshop action is essentially Photoshop recording the commands you give it and replaying them on command. Automating actions come in handy when you want to reduce the reptition of go-to techniques you reach for often. Keep reading to find out how to make editing easier.

HOW TO CREATE A PHOTOSHOP ACTION

  1. Go to the WINDOW TAB at the top of the screen on Photoshop’s menu panel

  2.  Select ACTIONS from the drop box menu

  3. In the dialogue box that opened, press the CREATE A NEW ACTION button (looks like a page)

  4. Name the action, and organize it as you wish with a category or shortcut key

  5. Press the RECORD buttom (look like a red circle) to begin recording

  6. Set up Frequency Separation (I’ll link the separate post on this topic below)

  7. Then press the STOP button, (the square next to the RECORD button)

  8. Delete the layers then in the ACTIONS window list, click on the action you’ve just created and press play to check if it’s recored properly

  9. Done :) Use this technique for any methods you find yourself using often to speed up workflow

My advice for this is to record actions of your common techniques so you don’t have to repeat yourself. Want more quick and easy content like this? Check out symoneseven.com, @symoneseven instagram or Symone Seven Youtube Channel

How can I edit makeup in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

This is an all inclusive guide to fixing some of the most common issues I run across when retouching makeup. In this overview, get a glimpse of how I fix the most complicated problems simply and efficiently.

HOW TO EDIT MAKEUP IN PHOTOSHOP?

  4. Thick Brows Fix: Go to the FILTER TAB at the top of the screen on Photoshop’s menu panel. Then use the HAND TOOL to push and pull the eyebrows into place.

  5. Blotchy Foundation Fix: Setup Frequency Separation and click lightly go over the face with the MIXER BRUSH (on all 26% settings) sampling everytime you move to a new area,

  6. Under Eye Crease Fix: While still on Frequency separation, choose the CLONE STAMP TOOL (on 100% all settings and a tiny size) and sample a clean area with OPTION, and click to cover the crease.

My advice as a photographer is to network with local talented  makeup artists and build a rapport with them. This way you can build a referral list to send to your clients to ensure you have makeup on set that doesn’t require so much time in post. It’s also a win win because those makeup artists will also recommend clients to you and help with portfolio shoots if the relationship beneficial for all.

How to fix a lash that’s falling off in Photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Makeup malfunctions are all too common that come up when retouching. We don’t always have the luxury of having a professional makeup artist on set to keep an eye out for those types of things. As photographers, sometimes we have to play MUA in Photoshop. Here is a quick fix video on how to get those fallen false lashes into place!

HOW TO FIX FALLEN LASHES IN PHOTOSHOP

  1. Use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL to select the lash that’s not falling off (and the surrounding skin) by clicking and dragging over it.

  2. Press COMMAND C to copy the selection and COMMAND V to paste it

  3. While it’s still selected, go to the EDIT tab at the top of the screeen, select TRANSFORM near the bottom of the menu, then FLIP HORIZONTAL to redirect the lash in the right position

  4. Click the lash selection and place in over top of the fallen lash

  5. Apply a layer Mask to this selection by pressing the LAYER MASK BUTTON in the LAYER potion at the bottom,

  6. Invert the layer mask by pressing COMMAND I

  7. Use your BRUSH TOOL on a high opacity and semi hardness to paint WHITE to reveal the new lash you placed

  8. Blend the selection seamlessly ito the photo. Paint with BLACK on the layer mask to erase any unwanted areas.

This issue is obviously best fixed during the shoot but sometimes we’re moving too fast. I do suggest however while you’re shooting to get in a habit of every so often zooming in on the eye in the playback photo to avoid issues like this and to check your focus.

How do I sharpen a photo?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Ever feel like something is missing from your photo despite taking your sweet time to edit it? I experienced that all too often so there are a couple finishing touches I put on all my photos to have that complete feeling. One of them is to sharpen the photo to give it more clarity. Let me know you one of the ways I top it off,  keep reading.

HOW TO SHARPEN A PHOTO

  1. Create a layer copy with the keyboard shortcut COMMAND  J

  2. Zoom in for a closer look with shortcut COMMAND +

  3. Go to Photoshop’s FILTER TAB at the top of the screen

  4. Select SHARPEN from the menu, then SMART SHARPEN from the drop down menu

  5. Adjust the radius to your liking, and click on an area like the eye to  see a preview in the smart sharpen filter window.

My tip for this is to keep your radius relatively low as going too high gives the image a cartoon look. This method is more so a finishing touch to add more detail than a correction of a blurry photo.

How do I fix overexposed photos in Photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Sometimes the prettiest blue skies white out whenever we press the shutter. Or overcast weather days seem bleek on the LCD screen. Though annoying, this problem is an easy fix if’s not completely blown out and there’s details left on the camera’s raw file. There is a remedy to that as well but that’s another post! Read below to find out how to fix ovexposed photos in Adobe’s Camera Raw.

HOW TO FIX OVEREXPOSED PHOTOS

  1. Open the raw file in ADOBE CAMERA RAW (this happens automatically when you open a raw file in Photoshop)

  2. Turn down the HIGHLIGHTS and WHITES slider in the main menu

  3. Go to the COLOR tab at the top of the slider menu, and turn down the LUMINANCE tab on the BLUES

  4. Finish color grading your image. I like to always lighten my SHADOWS slider to bring back details to the subject.

My biggest tip for this is to try to prevent this from occuring in camera . You can always underexpose by turning up your aperture (your f-stop controls the background) then brightening your subject in photoshop or by exposing for the sky and adding an external flash to properly light your subject while exposing for the background.

How do I remove dark marks in photoshop?

By SYMONE SEVEN

Our flaws are beauty marks. They can add character and context to our story. But sometimes, we have to remove them from the picture to focus on the bigger picture. I found a nondestructive way to do this is to clean up my blemishes before I do more intense techniques like frequency separation or dodge/burn. I recommend using this on acne stars, hyperpigmentation marks, unwanted moles, facial hair, stray eyebrow hairs, etc.

HOW TO REMOVE DARK BLEMISHES IN PHOTOSHOP

  1. Inspect the skin and decide which blemishes are necessary to remove. My tip is to not zoom in too closely and decide where to stop before you start to above going to far.

  2. Select the CLONE STAMP TOOL, and change the blend mode to LIGHTEN and set the opacity/flow around 30-40% high.

  3. Go over the blemishes by picking a clean skin sample with CLICK + OPTION and covering up the dark mark by clicking over it a couple times.

  4. Watch the mark fade before your eyes.

  5. Repeat until you’re satisified.

The biggest difference this technique makes is the blend mode on LIGHTEN. With the setting being on that mode, it only targets change to the dark pixels leaving the normal colored pixels alone. This allows you to only remove what you don’t want!
